About Us…
The Sacramento Suburban Water District (SSWD), located in Sacramento, California, is a publicly owned and operated water utility formed in 2002 resulting from the merger of two agencies. SSWD provides water to its customers from 72 operational groundwater wells. In addition, SSWD has contractual rights to 26,064 acre-feet per year from the City of Sacramento water entitlement; and a contract to purchase up to 29,000 acre-feet of surface water per year from Placer County Water Agency. SSWD is governed by a five-member Board of Directors.

The Position…
The Superintendent is a manager level position that is responsible for planning, organizing, assigning, directing, and supervising the operation, construction, and maintenance of the SSWD’s transmission and distribution systems, water treatment plants and production facilities, vehicles and equipment, and Cross-Connection Control Program. Duties include:

  • Recommending and assisting in the implementation of goals and objectives; establishing schedules and methods for performing a variety of Field Operation functions; implementing policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Ensuring the proper planning of maintenance, construction, and repair projects; reviews capital expansion of SSWD systems with engineering; participates in system design changes and improvements.
  • Participating in budget preparation and administration; preparing cost estimates for budget recommendations; submitting justifications for services, labor, materials, and related resources for public works and utilities projects or programs; monitoring and controlling expenditures.
  • Monitoring drinking water guidelines and standards as published by the State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Drinking Water, Environmental Protection Agency, AWWA, and local authorities; following and enforcing such guidelines and standards to provide safe drinking water that meets required statutes.
  • Serving as SSWD’s Distribution and Treatment Shift Operator.

The Ideal Candidate…
The Superintendent will possess knowledge of principles, methods, materials, and equipment used in water treatment and distribution system installation, maintenance, construction, and repair work; the Safe Drinking Water Act, domestic water quality and monitoring regulations, public health regulations regarding cross-connections, environmental regulations, and other laws and regulation that pertain to water quality and treatment in California; principles, methods, and practices used in water treatment and distribution; and all aspects of water quality, including sampling and monitoring, types of contaminants and potential adverse health impacts, aesthetic qualities (taste, odor, etc.). Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess the ability to organize, implement, and direct the installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and production systems and equipment; oversee the establishment and maintenance of certification, training, and work safety programs.

Qualified candidates will have…

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Five (5) years of experience in performing maintenance, construction, repair, and operations work for a water district, or in performing water treatment functions and plant operations, including five (5) years in a supervisory or lead capacity.

An Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in construction management technology/construction management, engineering technology/civil, environmental or mechanical engineering, management/business or public administration can substitute for one year of the Experience defined above.

License: Valid Driver’s License issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles and proof of good driving record as evidenced by the absence of multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for at least two (2) years duration. The driving record will not contribute to an increase in SSWD’s automobile rates. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis.

Certificates: Possession and maintenance of:

  • State of California Water Distribution Operator Certificate Grade D4.
  • State of California Water Treatment Operator Certificate Grade T2.

Compensation and Benefits…
The annual salary range is $78,565 - $112,236 DOE plus a competitive benefits package including CalPERS retirement (2% @ 55 for Classic tier and 2% @ 62 under 2013 PEPRA) and employer-paid medical, dental, vision and life insurance; voluntary deferred compensation and flexible benefit plans; educational reimbursement program; and paid vacation, and holidays.
