About Public Risk Innovation, Solutions, and Management
PRISM (previously CSAC Excess Insurance Authority) is a joint powers authority of California public entities, which was established in 1979 to provide insurance and risk management services to California’s counties. Since then, our membership has expanded beyond the counties to include numerous other public agencies such as cities, schools, joint powers authorities, fire districts, etc.

PRISM operates various risk-sharing pools, which provide insurance and risk management services to its members for lines of business including workers’ compensation, general liability, property, medical malpractice, and employee benefits.

About the Position
The Underwriting Specialist provides administrative support and underwriting assistance to the Underwriting Department. PRISM is a public agency and PRISM’s coverage programs are governed by committees. The Underwriting Specialist will assist the department in preparing for committee meetings, which may include writing agenda items, documenting underwriting decisions for disclosure, and preparing presentations. The Underwriting Specialist will assist the Senor Specialists with various underwriting tasks including providing premium quotes for additional insured requests, retention/deductible changes, and reviewing exposure data in renewal applications. This position is responsible for ensuring that Underwriting activities are documented, archived, and/or tracked. The Underwriting Specialist provides customer support to pool members, external partners, and other PRISM departments.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and team oriented, with a strong attention to detail, organization, and an ability to work within tight deadlines. The ideal candidate will have experience or education in underwriting, risk management, claims, pool administration, or finance. This position will support the Senior Underwriters in Underwriting activities, which may include the evaluation of financial data and the development of insurance premiums. The department primarily utilizes Excel or Access for developing premiums and reporting, proficiency in these tools or desire and aptitude for developing analytical skills is a plus.

The Underwriting Specialist will be responsible for managing the updating, tracking, and archiving of policy and insurance documents. This position will provide a learning opportunity for someone who has some experience with or is looking to gain experience with underwriting, insurance coverages, evaluating exposure data, and premium development. The Underwriting Specialist must have a service-oriented disposition and a strong interest in being part of a team, collaborating with, and supporting others. The Underwriting Specialist should display good communication skills to support the department in customer service activities.

Physical Requirements
Physical requirements of this position typically include: reaching, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Some travel may be required.

Licensing Requirements
A valid California Driver’s license is required. Proof of auto insurance with no exclusion for business use is required.

PRISM strives to compensate its employees within very competitive salary ranges. The hiring salary range for this position is $4,672 - $5,606 per month. Salary adjustments are based on individual merit and accomplishments. A generous benefit package is provided including Public Employees Retirement System (PERS); a Section 125 Cafeteria Plan with coverage options including health, dental and vision; long-term disability and short-term disability insurance; life insurance; optional deferred compensation program; and sick and vacation leaves. As a PERS participant, PRISM employees are exempt from paying Social Security except for the Medicare portion of the cost.
