Senior Underwriter – Workers’ Compensation

Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Underwriting this position is responsible for applying underwriting principles through experience rating analysis and displaying proper underwriting judgment in the analyzing and rating of risk and servicing of the workers’ compensation program.  Job duties may also include the training and/or supervision of staff.  This position serves as a subject matter expert for underwriting and rating of workers’ compensation.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Manage the underwriting and servicing of mid to large and complex healthcare organizations’ workers’ compensation exposure, both on direct and brokered accounts while maintaining professional working relationships with all internal and external customers.
  • Underwrite new business and renewals, including issuance of coverage contract, amendments and certificates of coverage for workers’ compensation, through experience rating and loss rating.
  • Possess a high degree of proficiency of the underwriting process, with a solid background in risk analysis.
  • Manage the data collection and calculation of the Workers’ Compensation Experience Rating Factor.
  • Oversee collection of monthly contributions through adherence to the company’s payment policy.
  • Analyze and resolve issues pertaining to coverage.
  • Assist facilities and brokers with questions regarding rates, credits, premium methodology, and exposure statistics.
  • Assist the Department in collaborating with Employee Safety, Claims, Information Technology and Member Services to ensure members’ needs are met in an effective and efficient manner.
  • In collaboration with the Director, create and revise coverage documents and procedures as needed.
  • Approve coverage requests, including underwriting and evaluating the risk, completion of forms, and maintenance of data.
  • Conduct site visits and meetings as required.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating database and reports.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of set variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Other duties as requested.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8-10 years’ experience in workers’ compensation insurance.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter or Associate in Risk Management insurance designation preferred.
  • Has a thorough understanding of the California Workers’ Compensation classification and experience rating plans.
  • Ability to train, supervise, and work well with others.
  • Excellent presentation, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented and functions with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in managing own workflow, prioritizing multiple work assignments in a dynamic environment, and resolves questions and problems with management and peers.
  • Proficient with computers/software, including:  Word, Excel, and Windows.
  • Ability to travel.
